The Dominica Dialysis Association is a registered non-profit civic organisation in Dominica established to advocate for, support, and improve the quality of life of individuals living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Functioning as a patient-centric support network and public health advocate, the association bridges the gap between clinical institutional treatment at the state level and the socioeconomic realities faced by patients undergoing long-term maintenance hemodialysis.

Historical Background and Foundation

The association was officially launched on September 4, 2022, during an inaugural ceremony held at the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) building in Roseau. The organisation's formation emerged directly from the lived experiences of renal patients navigating the demanding logistical and emotional landscape of long-term therapy.

The establishment of the entity was the brainchild of dialysis patient Lander Bruno, who conceptualised a formal support structure after undergoing years of continuous renal replacement therapy. The foundational process was facilitated by Yvonne Alexander, the President of the Dominica Cancer Society, who provided institutional guidance on the governance of NGOs. In recognition of this pivotal developmental role, Yvonne Alexander was named the first honorary member of the association during its public launch.

Executive Leadership and Organizational Governance

The organisation operates under an elected executive board composed of patient advocates, community leaders, and civic partners. The governance structure oversees fundraising compliance, patient outreach programs, and educational campaigns.

2. Public Awareness and Health Education: Conducting public campaigns aimed at reducing the incidence of risk factors linked to renal failure. The organisation focuses heavily on the prevention and early detection of diabetes and hypertension, which statistical data shows account for approximately 60% of all localized kidney failure cases.
3. Financial and Resource Mobilization: Organising national fundraisers, including charity raffle draws backed by regional and domestic commercial partners, to procure direct support assets for patients. These assets help offset the financial costs associated with diagnostic testing, specialized medications, and transit logistics for patients traveling from rural out-districts to the central treatment facility.
