Dominica Labour Party candidate for the Roseau North by-election, Ashma McDougall, says she is encouraged by the positive response she has received from residents as she continues her campaign in the constituency.
McDougall said her interactions with voters have exceeded her expectations, describing the response from both young people and older residents as motivating and reassuring.
She acknowledged that some people have suggested Roseau North is not traditionally considered a Labour Party stronghold but said she views the challenge as an opportunity to demonstrate what she can offer the constituency.
According to McDougall, her focus has remained on engaging directly with residents and listening to their concerns rather than concentrating on her political opponents. She said these conversations have highlighted a number of opportunities to improve the constituency and have strengthened her commitment to public service.
McDougall said she believes she is bringing a fresh perspective to the campaign, supported by new ideas and a different approach to addressing the needs of Roseau North.
She expressed confidence in her ability to deliver meaningful results for residents, adding that her campaign is centred on improving people’s lives rather than political competition.
“I’m more focused on how we’re going to better the lives of individuals in Roseau North than, quite frankly, contending in this particular by-election against opponents,” she said.
The Roseau North by-election is expected to be closely watched as political parties continue their preparations for the next general election, with candidates using the campaign to present their vision for the constituency and engage directly with voters.
