Interim President of the Dominica State College (DSC), Trudy Christian, has emphasized that continued investment in the institution is essential for achieving long-term national development, describing higher education as a catalyst for generational transformation rather than a source of immediate returns.
Christian made the remarks during the college’s 2026 graduation ceremony, where she reflected on the institution’s impact over its 23-year history and appealed for sustained support from policymakers, government and development partners.
Addressing those responsible for shaping national policy, Christian acknowledged that progress in education can sometimes appear gradual. However, she stressed that the true value of investing in tertiary education is measured by the lasting impact graduates have on society over many years.
“When there is so much still to achieve, incremental progress can sometimes feel painfully slow, and frustration can easily build,” she said. “What we do at the Dominica State College is not simply about immediate returns. It is about generational transformation. It is about national transformation.“
Christian highlighted the college’s broad contribution to the country’s workforce, noting that DSC offers more than 30 academic programmes spanning technical and vocational education, nursing, teacher education, arts and sciences. The institution graduates more than 300 students annually and delivers professional development and short-course training to hundreds of other learners.
She said these programmes have helped build the human capital needed across virtually every sector of Dominica’s economy, from health and education to business, public administration and skilled trades.
Christian also pointed to the influence of DSC graduates in national life, observing that many of this year’s featured speakers at secondary school graduation ceremonies were themselves alumni of the college.
“This year alone, at almost every secondary school graduation across Dominica, the featured speakers, individuals selected because of their contribution to society and their ability to inspire the next generation, were graduates of the Dominica State College,” she noted.
While expressing gratitude for the continued support provided by the Government of Dominica and private sector partners, Christian said ongoing investment will enable the institution to continue preparing future generations of leaders, professionals and innovators.
She said education remains one of the country’s most valuable long-term investments, with the benefits extending well beyond individual graduates to families, communities and the wider national economy.
