Police Urge Responsible Riding Ahead of Bike Fest 2026

The Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force is calling on motorcyclists and members of the public to exercise caution and adhere to traffic laws as preparations intensify for Bike Fest 2026, scheduled to take place from July 31 to August 3.

Law enforcement officials say that while the annual event has grown into one of Dominica’s major tourism attractions, public safety must remain the foremost priority throughout the celebrations. The police have urged participants, patrons and organizers to work together to ensure a safe and incident-free festival.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Jeffrey James emphasized that several provisions under the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act specifically address dangerous and irresponsible behaviour by motorcyclists. These include offences relating to reckless and dangerous cycling, careless and inconsiderate riding, operating motorcycles while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to wear approved protective headgear.

James noted that authorities continue to observe instances of riders operating motorcycles without helmets, a practice he described as particularly concerning given the potential consequences in the event of an accident.

Each offence on conviction carries a penalty of fine and confinement,” he warned, while appealing to influential members of the motorcycling community and responsible riders to discourage reckless stunts and unsafe behaviour on public roads.

Police are also encouraging participants and spectators to comply with instructions issued by police officers, security personnel and event marshals during the various activities planned for the festival weekend.

According to James, the growing popularity of Bike Fest has elevated the event into a significant tourism product for the island, making the safety of residents, visitors, bikers and other road users even more important.

Meanwhile, the Discover Dominica Authority and the Dominica Festivals Committee are encouraging widespread public support for the event while reinforcing the message of responsible participation.

Officials are hoping that Bike Fest 2026 will not only be the biggest staging to date but also the safest, as organizers continue promoting the message: “Ride hard, ride free, ride together, helmets on, ride on.”
