Meloticia Mills Outlines Vision for Stronger Mathematics Teaching in Dominica

A group of mathematics teachers in Dominica has attained regional qualifications after successfully completing the Advancing Caribbean Teachers (ACT) in Mathematics Core II Programme, an initiative aimed at strengthening the quality of mathematics instruction across the region.

The programme forms part of a broader effort to improve student performance in mathematics by equipping teachers with modern instructional strategies, digital tools and innovative teaching approaches. Participants engaged in a structured blended learning model that combined face-to-face sessions with ongoing online collaboration and professional support.

National Coordinator and Mathematics Curriculum Officer, Meloticia Mills, explained that the initiative goes beyond traditional one-time workshops by fostering sustained professional learning and reflective practice among educators.

According to Mills, the programme seeks to create more engaging and inclusive mathematics classrooms while encouraging teachers to adopt a wider range of effective teaching strategies.

We hope to see mathematics classrooms that are more engaging, more inclusive, and more responsive to the needs of all learners,” Mills stated. She added that the programme also aims to strengthen collaboration among teachers, allowing successful practices and resources to be shared across schools.

The ACT in Mathematics Programme places particular emphasis on strengthening pedagogy, integrating digital technologies into classroom instruction, promoting the use of open educational resources and encouraging gender-responsive and inclusive teaching practices. Officials say these measures are intended to ensure that all students are given equitable opportunities to succeed in mathematics.

Minister for Education, Human Resource Planning, Vocational Training and National Excellence, Octavia Alfred, praised the teachers for their commitment and described the initiative as timely, given ongoing concerns about mathematics performance throughout the Caribbean.

Alfred emphasized that mathematics plays a critical role in Dominica’s development agenda, particularly as the country advances major initiatives in climate resilience, renewable energy, infrastructure and economic planning.

Mathematics matters to Dominica because we are building the world’s first climate resilient nation,” the minister stated, highlighting the importance of mathematical skills in areas such as geothermal energy, engineering, budgeting and agriculture.

Education officials believe the enhanced competencies acquired through the programme will ultimately contribute to improved student outcomes and help prepare young Dominicans for careers in science, technology, engineering, finance and other sectors essential to the country’s future development.
