Leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Joshua Francis, says his party is awaiting a decision from the government before determining its next steps regarding the vacant Roseau North parliamentary seat.
The constituency became vacant following the resignation of Parliamentary Representative Miriam Blanchard, creating the possibility of a by-election in accordance with constitutional requirements. However, Francis says uncertainty remains because Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit also retains the authority to dissolve Parliament and call a general election instead.
Speaking on the matter, Francis disclosed that the UPP recently held discussions concerning the implications of Blanchard’s resignation and the options available to the party moving forward.
According to him, one of the key questions considered was whether the government would proceed with a by-election for Roseau North or opt for a general election before the constitutional deadline for a by-election is reached. He noted that while the Constitution requires a by-election to be called within 90 days of the vacancy, a dissolution of Parliament would alter that process.
Francis said the party does not want to make premature decisions while uncertainty remains regarding the government’s intentions.
“We are not sure whether we are going to have a by-election or a general election,” he stated while explaining the party’s position.
The UPP leader indicated that the party will wait for an official announcement before publicly outlining its strategy. He stressed that the organisation is monitoring developments closely and remains prepared to respond once a decision is made.
Francis added that if a by-election is called, the UPP will take what it considers the necessary steps in the interest of both the people of Roseau North and the wider Dominican public. However, he declined to discuss potential candidates or campaign plans until the political situation becomes clearer.
