Skerrit Announces Major Renovation Programme Planned for Schools Across Dominica

The Government of Dominica is preparing to launch a major school modernisation programme aimed at improving learning environments and upgrading educational facilities across the island.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit announced the initiative during a press conference, describing it as part of a broader effort to bring school infrastructure to a consistent national standard while creating more comfortable and functional spaces for students and teachers.

According to the Prime Minister, many school buildings remain structurally sound but require modernization to improve comfort, appearance and overall functionality.

We’re already looking at a complete transformation of the physical structures,” Skerrit said. “So many schools have been around for some time. Structurally, they’re still sound, but we need to enhance their comfort.

The planned works are expected to include repainting, tiling, replacement of windows and other improvements designed to upgrade school facilities throughout the country.

Skerrit compared the proposed initiative to investments previously made in the health sector, where the government undertook extensive upgrades to medical facilities across Dominica.

The Prime Minister said the objective is to ensure that schools provide a conducive environment for learning while supporting the needs of students, teachers and administrators.

There’s going to be launched a major programme of transformation and renewal of the school plants across Dominica,” he stated.

The announcement comes as the government continues work on several new educational facilities, including the Goodwill Secondary School and other schools being constructed with support from the People’s Republic of China.

Officials have not yet announced a timeline for the full modernization programme, but government says education infrastructure remains a key priority as part of wider investments in human development, workforce preparation and national growth.
