Government is moving ahead with plans to construct Dominica’s first synthetic athletics track, a development officials say could significantly improve the country’s ability to train athletes and eventually host major regional sporting events.
Minister of State in the Ministry of Sports, Senator Oscar George, said recent progress has brought the project closer to implementation, with key documentation already completed to allow the initiative to move forward. “We are partnering with the Athletics Association to develop our first ever synthetic track,” George explained.
The proposed facility is expected to be developed in the Point Round area as part of a broader master plan for sports infrastructure. According to the minister, the project will be carried out in collaboration with international partners, including Mondo and World Athletics, which are expected to assist with technical guidance and evaluation.
“I signed this endorsement form to move ahead with this project. I believe that was the final standing documentation required for us to move ahead,” George stated.
He added that the next stage of the process involves coordination with international partners who are expected to visit Dominica to assess the project site and review the development plans.
“I believe we’re just waiting on our partners Mondo and World Athletics to finalize a date to conduct a visit to Dominica,” he said.
George also noted that the government has already engaged Patriots Limited to develop a comprehensive master plan for the wider sports complex, which will guide future development in the area. “We have concept designs which we have shared with World Athletics and Mondo and of course they’re moving ahead with this,” he explained.
According to the minister, the construction of a modern synthetic track would not only enhance training opportunities for Dominican athletes but could also position the country to host regional competitions such as the CARIFTA Games in the future.
