Senator Delbert Paris Challenges Government on Electoral Rules

Tensions flared in Dominica’s Parliament as debate over new electoral regulations triggered sharp exchanges between government and opposition members. At the centre of the dispute was opposition senator Delbert Paris, who questioned the government’s approach to drafting the regulations.

Paris argued that the regulations appeared designed to give government an upper hand rather than ensuring fairness and transparency. He called for greater consultation and accused the administration of rushing measures that could impact voter rights.

Government ministers, however, dismissed the claims, insisting that the regulations were a necessary step to modernize the electoral system and strengthen democracy. They argued that the provisions in the draft legislation had gone through proper channels and were framed to comply with Dominica’s Constitution. The exchange highlighted wider public concerns about electoral reform.

Calls from civic groups and regional observers for updated processes, including clearer rules for voter registration, campaign financing, and election monitoring, have fueled heightened scrutiny on how reforms are being introduced. The conflict mirrors wider political tensions, with opposition leaders stressing that certain actions could erode public faith in the conduct of general elections.

The government, in turn, continues to stress that reform is being pursued to guarantee credibility and efficiency in the electoral process.

The matter is expected to resurface in upcoming sittings as the draft regulations undergo further review, with both sides indicating they will not back down from their positions. For many Dominicans, the outcome of these debates will signal how the country navigates one of the most important democratic reforms in recent memory.
