Point Round Sports Complex Project Enters Next Phase
Plans for the development of a modern athletics facility at Point Round are moving forward, with government officials and key stakeholders reviewing designs and implementation proposals for what is expected to become one of Dominica’s premier sporting venues.
The Point Round Track and Field Facility Technical Committee recently convened a stakeholder meeting to examine the master plan prepared for the site and gather feedback from sports associations, government agencies and technical experts. The meeting forms part of ongoing efforts to finalize plans for the construction of a synthetic athletics track and supporting infrastructure at the venue.
Minister for Sports, Culture and Community Development, Gretta Roberts, along with other government officials and stakeholders, participated in the discussions aimed at refining the proposed designs and ensuring that the facility meets the needs of athletes and sporting organizations. Officials say the master plan includes design concepts, cost estimates and recommendations for phased implementation.
According to Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Oscar George, the government is working closely with World Athletics and other partners to advance the project. World Athletics is expected to visit Dominica in July to conduct further site assessments and finalize aspects of the implementation package.
The proposed facility is expected to include a synthetic track, change rooms, washrooms, spectator bleachers and parking facilities during the initial phase of development. Future phases are expected to incorporate additional amenities such as athlete accommodation, administrative offices and a swimming pool, which would be developed in collaboration with the Dominica Amateur Swimming Association.
Government estimates place the overall cost of the project at approximately EC$14 million. Because of the scale of the investment, officials have decided to undertake the works in phases, with priority being given to the construction of the track and essential support facilities.
The project is being supported by World Athletics and the Qatar Development Fund, with World Athletics contributing specifically to the installation of the synthetic track. The Government of Dominica will finance and oversee the construction of the additional facilities required to create a fully functioning sports complex.
