Ministry of Health Receives Computers to Enhance Disease Monitoring

The donation includes 15 laptop computers and five desktop units that will be distributed to health facilities around the island to support the collection, management and reporting of health information. Officials say the equipment will play an important role in improving disease monitoring, strengthening primary health care services and supporting more efficient decision-making within the public health system.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services, Dr. Kyra Paul, welcomed the contribution and emphasized the importance of timely access to health data.
According to Dr. Paul, real-time information is critical for monitoring disease outbreaks, assessing public health trends and supporting policy and operational decisions. She explained that the new equipment will be deployed primarily at health centres where large volumes of health information are generated and processed.
The donation also supports the ministry’s plans to roll out a Health Management Information System, which is expected to modernise the way health information is collected and shared throughout the country. Officials believe transitioning from paper-based systems to digital platforms will improve efficiency, accuracy and access to information across the healthcare network.
PAHO Country Programme Specialist Dr. Nicole Slack-Liburd said the equipment forms part of the organization’s support for the Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV, syphilis and hepatitis programme, while also contributing to broader efforts to strengthen primary health care.
She noted that PAHO’s assistance extends beyond providing hardware and includes technical support, training and collaboration with healthcare professionals working throughout the system. The organization has continued to partner with Dominica on initiatives aimed at improving health outcomes and expanding the use of digital technologies within the sector.
Health officials say the new equipment will help position Dominica for a more modern and responsive healthcare system, enabling clinics and medical personnel to better manage information while improving the delivery of services to patients across the island.
