Isaac Baptiste Declares UWP Ready to Govern, Calls for Opposition Unity

Former United Workers Party (UWP) President Isaac Baptiste has stated that the party is now prepared to assume national leadership and is actively positioning itself as a viable alternative to the Dominica Labour Party (DLP). During a recent radio interview, Baptiste emphasised the party’s commitment to restoring good governance and democratic accountability.

The UWP has always believed in the rule of law, transparency, and responsible leadership,” he said. “We are ready and willing to serve the people of Dominica.

Baptiste, who has held several key leadership positions within the UWP, acknowledged the internal challenges the party has faced in recent years, including leadership transitions and electoral setbacks. However, he noted that the party has been engaged in organisational restructuring, youth recruitment, and policy development to rebuild public trust.

Importantly, Baptiste invited other opposition groups and civil society organisations to consider coalition-building or strategic cooperation before the next general elections. “We must be mature enough to work together for the national interest,” he urged. “This is not just about defeating one party—it’s about restoring effective governance.

Political analysts have noted that a fragmented opposition has historically played into the hands of dominant political parties in the Caribbean. Baptiste’s comments reflect growing public sentiment that meaningful political change may require unity among diverse anti-government forces.

He also highlighted several policy areas where the UWP intends to offer clear alternatives: public sector reform, housing development, agriculture, and education access. “We must present the people with serious plans, not just criticisms,” Baptiste added.

In response to recent speculation about the UWP’s visibility and preparedness, Baptiste stated that the party will soon unveil new candidates and a roadmap for national development. While a formal manifesto is still in the works, he assured listeners that the UWP is focused on dialogue with communities and rebuilding on the ground.

Some independent voices have cautiously welcomed Baptiste’s call for unity, though it remains unclear whether smaller parties or grassroots movements are open to a formal alliance. The political landscape remains dynamic, but Baptiste’s remarks signal that the UWP is actively re-entering the public arena before any potential elections.
