Import Permit Required for Agricultural Goods During Festivities

As Dominica prepares for a wave of visitors during the festive season, the Ministry of Agriculture is reminding all travelers that import permits are mandatory for anyone entering the country with fruits, vegetables, or fresh meat. This requirement applies to both returning nationals and guests from neighbouring territories.

Petra Grell-Shillingford, speaking on behalf of the Plant Protection and Quarantine Unit, emphasized the importance of the measure in protecting Dominica’s fragile agricultural landscape. “We want to stress on this because as you know, this is our border security,” she said. “This is what is needed to ensure that Dominica remains clean and green.”

Travelers entering via Douglas-Charles Airport, Woodbridge Bay Port, or the Roseau Ferry Terminal will be required to present this permit. The cost is $10, and it must be obtained in advance from the Quarantine Unit, now located at Val House on Charles Avenue, near the AID Bank. Office hours run from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, though the cashier closes at 3:00 PM.

Mrs. Grell-Shillingford added that the country is currently fighting multiple invasive species and plant diseases, making the vigilance at entry points even more critical. With increased arrivals from French territories and elsewhere, the risk of unregulated imports introducing harmful pests has grown.

The Ministry is urging families hosting visitors or returning home for the holidays to take proactive steps. “We are advising persons that with any family or friends or they are returning to Dominica, that they contact the unit to obtain an import permit,” she said.

This initiative forms part of Dominica’s wider agricultural defense strategy, aimed at ensuring long-term food security and environmental protection.
