Hon. Oscar George Announces Over $900,000 Investment in Dominica Library Services

Dominica’s commitment to education and literacy has taken a significant leap forward with the announcement of a major investment in the island’s library infrastructure. Speaking during a public address, the Hon. Oscar George revealed that over $900,000 will be allocated to upgrading library services nationwide, with a specific focus on the Roseau Public Library and the Portsmouth Public Library.

Our library services have for some time needed serious attention, and I am happy to report that this government is delivering,” said Minister George. “We’re investing over $900,000 to bring meaningful improvements to how Dominicans access reading material, technology, and information services.

According to George, the first major upgrade will be to the Roseau Public Library, which is set to become a central hub for digital learning and public resource access. “The vision is to make the Roseau Library a place not just for books, but for technology, training, and community interaction,” he said.

He also highlighted that the Portsmouth Library is scheduled for similar development. “We understand the importance of access in the northern district. The Portsmouth Library will be enhanced with new equipment and extended services to serve a wider cross-section of our people.

Alongside development works, the programme promotes awareness and strengthens community ties. “We are moving toward a modern library system that will cater to the youth, to researchers, and to older persons who may wish to learn new skills or engage with community content,” George explained.

The investment comes at a time when many Dominicans have expressed concern over the state of public learning resources and the long-standing need for a revitalized library network. Minister George acknowledged these concerns: “This project is long overdue, and we are proud to be the administration that is making it happen.

He further noted, “Libraries are not relics, they are pillars of community development. Whether it is a student preparing for exams or an entrepreneur seeking business information, we want the library to be part of their journey.

The new investment is being viewed by many as a timely and forward-looking move that reflects the government’s broader strategy to enhance education and access to information in Dominica.
