Electoral Commissioner Calls for Unity and Renewal Ahead of General Elections

Hilary Shillingford, a member of Dominica’s Electoral Commission, has issued a public call for national unity and introspection as the country approaches its next general elections. During a recent interview, Shillingford emphasised the need for Dominicans to embrace a spirit of reconciliation, reform, and readiness for democratic renewal.

While not announcing any specific election date, Shillingford stressed that the population must begin preparing itself for “a new national chapter.” He noted that the country stands at a crossroads, where public trust in institutions and the electoral process must be rebuilt through transparency, civic participation, and robust constitutional adherence.

We are facing serious national issues that demand clear vision and decisive leadership,” he said. “It is time to turn the page, to look forward, and to prepare ourselves for a refreshed approach to governance.

His comments come amid ongoing discussions about electoral reform and the readiness of the Electoral Commission to implement changes that ensure a fair and credible electoral process. Shillingford urged citizens to participate in the electoral dialogue, to vote responsibly, and to reject divisive rhetoric.

While some view his remarks as hinting at early elections, Shillingford offered no timeline, instead emphasizing the importance of “principled preparation and a collective commitment to democratic values.”

Calls for electoral modernization have intensified in recent years, with civil society groups pushing for updated voter lists, transparent campaign financing, and impartial media access. Shillingford acknowledged these concerns and assured the public that the Commission is working diligently behind the scenes to address them.

We are not here to serve partisan interests,” he added. “Our duty is to the Constitution, to the rule of law, and to every Dominican.

His message, framed in nonpartisan language, signals an effort to depoliticize the run-up to elections and restore faith in democratic governance. As public anticipation grows, many will be watching the Commission’s next steps closely.
