Dominica and the People’s Republic of China have signed a renewed protocol for the dispatch of Chinese medical practitioners to serve on the island for the next five years. The agreement, covering the period 2025 to 2030, was formalised during a signing ceremony attended by officials from both countries.
China’s Ambassador to Dominica, His Excellency Chu Maoming, described the protocol as an important milestone in the bilateral relationship. “Since the first China medical team arrived in Dominica in 2009, cooperation between our two countries in the medical field has grown stronger, yielding remarkable achievements,” he said. He noted that over the past 16 years, 40 Chinese medical professionals have worked alongside Dominican colleagues at the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital, bringing “expertise, compassion, and dedication” during times of natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ambassador Chu highlighted that the renewed agreement continues a tradition of mutual trust and tangible results in healthcare delivery. “The work has saved lives and forged a lasting bond of trust between our two countries,” he added.
Minister for Health Cassanni Laville expressed appreciation for China’s long-standing support in addressing medical staffing gaps and enhancing local healthcare capacity. “Over sixteen years now, they have partnered with us with medical cooperation to provide specialists to us in areas where we’ve had deficiencies,” he said. Laville emphasized that China’s contributions go beyond infrastructure and equipment, extending to training and the provision of skilled human resources.
The agreement ensures that Chinese medical specialists will continue to work in critical areas of Dominica’s healthcare system, strengthening service delivery and expanding specialist care for the population.
