Dominica Schools Reopen Sept 8, Grammar School Set for Sept 15

Chief Education Officer Dr. Jeffrey Blaize has confirmed that the new academic year for Dominica will begin on Monday, September 8, 2025. However, students at the Dominica Grammar School (DGS) will return a week later, on Monday, September 15, due to additional preparations at the institution.

Dr. Blaize explained that the education sector is prepared for the start of the year, following teacher professional development sessions held over the past two days. He emphasized that schools will begin implementing aspects of education reform, particularly the revised timetable, which will be closely monitored for adherence.

He noted that principals were engaged in a meeting on Wednesday, August 27, where reforms were reviewed and feedback incorporated. According to him, the principals have embraced the measures, ensuring that all schools are aligned with the new strategies.

While DGS students will resume later, teachers there have already reported for duty and are actively preparing classrooms and systems for the reopening. Dr. Blaize reassured that the delay is specific to DGS and not reflective of broader challenges in the education system.

The Chief Education Officer also highlighted the upcoming National Principals’ Meeting, where both primary and secondary school leaders will be in attendance to review progress and share insights. He confirmed that Dominica currently operates 58 primary schools and 15 secondary schools, all of which are expected to participate in the reforms being rolled out this term.

The Ministry of Education remains focused on ensuring a smooth start to the school year while advancing reforms aimed at strengthening teaching, learning, and administration across the island.
