Dominica Resolves ePassport Processing Delays, Streamlines Services

Dominica’s ePassport services have seen significant improvements after overcoming initial processing delays, according to the Minister for the Ministry of National Security and Legal Affairs, Hon Rayburn Blackmoore. These delays were initially caused by the transition from traditional machine-readable passports to more secure electronic passports, which include enhanced security features and a microchip for identity verification.

The improvements in the ePassport issuance process were highlighted during a recent national security press conference.

Minister Blackmoore detailed several strategic interventions the government implemented to expedite passport processing. These measures included hiring staff, purchasing an extra printer, and introducing a three-shift operational system to handle applications more efficiently.

As a result of these changes, the Immigration Department is now able to issue ePassports within just one week of application, a significant enhancement compared to earlier delays and a standout achievement regionally. This swift processing capability not only alleviates the inconvenience previously experienced by applicants but also sets a new standard for passport issuance in the Caribbean.

As a result, there is currently no backlog, with 214 ePassports ready for pickup. Minister Blackmoore encouraged those notified to collect their ePassports promptly.

To sustain and further improve these efficiencies, the government has authorized the acquisition of an additional 50,000 passport books and continues to refine the immigration system’s operational processes.
