Dominica Bar Association Focuses on Generational Wealth During Law Week

The Dominica Bar Association is placing property rights, inheritance, and generational wealth at the centre of Law Week 2026, with activities designed to help the public better understand how today’s legal decisions can affect families for years to come.

President of the Dominica Bar Association, Noelize Knigh-Didier, said this year’s theme is “Legacy, the Law and You,” with attention on how people preserve, secure, and transfer property, not only for income but also for future generations.

Knight-Didier said the week will include continuing legal education sessions on succession and probate law, areas that frequently affect families when relatives die without clear wills, proper documentation, or settled property arrangements.

A major youth component will also take place through a public speaking competition for high school students at the Prevost Cinema Ballroom. The topic, “Mother Has, Father Has, God Bless the Child Who Has His Own,” will invite students to examine whether inherited property builds generational wealth or creates a sense of entitlement.

According to Knight-Didier, about seven to nine schools are expected to participate in the competition, giving young people a chance to engage directly with legal, social, and family questions that often shape household stability in Dominica.

The focus on property rights comes at a time when many families continue to face disputes over land, family homes, wills, succession, and informal ownership arrangements passed down across generations.

For the Bar Association, Law Week is not only about the legal profession speaking to itself. This year’s activities are expected to bring lawyers, students, educators, and the wider public into discussions about how better legal planning can protect families, reduce conflict, and help younger Dominicans understand the value and responsibility attached to property ownership.
