Dominica’s electoral reform process is set to enter a new phase in July, when voter identification cards are expected to begin distribution to individuals whose voter registration status has already been confirmed.
Chief Election Officer Anthea Joseph announced this week that while test printing of the cards has already taken place, no official cards have yet been issued to the public. She stressed that any claims to the contrary are false.
“We have tested cards, the printing of cards, but we have not issued any cards to date. Cards will be issued somewhere in July of this year,” Joseph stated.
According to Joseph, the Electoral Office is planning several distribution methods to make the process accessible to voters in Dominica and overseas. She explained that eligible individuals will be able to collect cards directly from the Electoral Office, receive them at designated confirmation centres, or have them mailed where necessary.
“There are three ways in which the law allows for persons to receive their cards,” she explained. “You can either come in, in person, it can be mailed, or we probably can have them delivered to the confirmation centers.”
The Electoral Office also intends to organise district-based distribution schedules, allowing officers to travel to constituencies on specific dates to facilitate collection by confirmed voters.
Joseph reiterated that no cards have yet entered public circulation. “There have been absolutely no cards distributed thus far,” she said, adding that the office will issue public announcements once the official rollout process begins.
The voter identification card initiative forms part of broader electoral reform legislation introduced in Dominica, aimed at strengthening voter verification procedures and modernising elements of the country’s electoral system.
