Trafalgar Basketball Court

The Trafalgar Basketball Court is located in the scenic village of Trafalgar, nestled in Saint George Parish, Dominica. Positioned roughly 6 kilometres northeast of Roseau, the facility sits in the heart of the Roseau Valley, an area celebrated for its natural hot springs and mountain scenery. The court plays a central role in village life, serving both as a venue for athletic development and a space for community engagement.

Location and Access of the Trafalgar Basketball Court

The court is easily accessible by road via Trafalgar Road, a 15–20 minute drive from the capital. Local bus services and taxis offer convenient transportation options. The court is located close to central residential areas in Trafalgar and is not far from the Trafalgar Primary School, making it a popular site for youth activity and school-related sports programming.

Facility Features and Upgrades

The Trafalgar Basketball Court is a standard hardcourt setup used for both casual play and organised competitions. Recent upgrades, funded through BNTF Cycle 10, totalling over EC$314,000, have significantly enhanced the facility. Works have included:

  • Construction of retaining walls to stabilise the terrain
  • Fencing and gate installations for security and controlled access
  • Lighting enhancements to allow for evening use
  • Pavilion-style stands for spectators
  • Repairs to rims and playing surface to improve game quality

Regional Contractors Inc. managed the upgrade project and forms part of a broader initiative by the Government of Dominica to strengthen rural infrastructure and promote wellness through sports.

Role in Community Sports

As a home venue for the Roseau Valley Basketball League, the court regularly hosts matches that attract participants and spectators from across the valley and surrounding communities. It also serves as a training ground for young athletes and a recreational space for residents of all ages. The Ministry for Culture, Youth, Sports, and Community Development continues to support such facilities as vital elements of social development, youth empowerment, and local cohesion.
