Salybia Resource Centre

Salybia Resource Centre is a pivotal institution located in the heart of the Kalinago Territory on Dominica’s east coast. Serving as a hub for healthcare, education, and culture, it reflects the resilience and self-determined spirit of the Kalinago people.
Origins and Purpose of the Salybia Resource Centre
Established in 2002 through the collaborative efforts of Ross University School of Medicine students and local Kalinago leaders, the Salybia Resource Centre was conceived to address the pressing healthcare needs of the indigenous community. The initiative, known as the Salybia Mission Project (SMP), aimed to provide consistent medical services, improve health outcomes, and empower the Kalinago through education and community engagement.
Healthcare Services
The Centre operates as a primary healthcare facility, offering general medical consultations to maternal and child health care. Notably, it has become a vital birthing center, with trained nurses like Winnie Joseph safely delivering numerous babies. The facility also conducts health education sessions on diabetes management and infection control, aiming to promote preventive care within the community.
Community Empowerment and Education
While focused on health, the Salybia Resource Centre also boosts community development efforts. It offers educational programs, vocational training, and cultural workshops to preserve and promote Kalinago heritage. Initiatives include traditional craft-making sessions, language preservation efforts, and youth mentorship programs designed to strengthen cultural identity and provide economic opportunities.
Infrastructure and Resilience
The Centre has been instrumental in disaster preparedness and recovery efforts in response to natural disasters like Hurricane Maria. It serves as an emergency shelter and coordinates relief activities, ensuring the community can access essential services during crises. The Centre’s infrastructure has been fortified to withstand such events, reflecting a commitment to resilience and sustainability.
Collaborative Efforts and Future Plans
The Salybia Resource Centre’s success is attributed to the collaborative efforts of local leaders, international volunteers, and organisations. Ongoing partnerships aim to expand the Centre’s services, including the introduction of telemedicine, mental health support, and enhanced educational programs. Such programs support broad-based community growth and the ongoing advancement of the Kalinago people through local action.
The Salybia Resource Centre continues to bring real change to the Kalinago Territory, showing how deeply the community values health, learning, and keeping cultural traditions strong and alive.
