Political Career of Kelleb John Laurent

Kelleb John Laurent’s service defined his role as a member of Dominica’s House of Assembly. He won the St Joseph constituency in the July 1980 General Elections. He was appointed Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, in the Dominica Freedom Party government led by Eugenia Charles. His tenure in politics was distinguished by significant contributions to developing policies affecting youth, health, and education.

Laurent was also deeply involved in local governance, serving on the St Joseph village council for many years. His efforts in local government were instrumental in fostering community development and civic engagement.

In 2003, the Dominica government honoured Kelleb John Laurent with the Meritorious Service Award, acknowledging his outstanding service and dedication to the nation. Further celebrating his contributions to sports, particularly cricket, a stand at the Windsor Park Stadium in Roseau was named in his honor—the Clem John and Kelleb Laurent Stand. His induction into the Dominica Hall of Fame for Sports points to his significant impact in promoting and developing cricket in Dominica.

Following his death on 28 April 2010, the government declared a national day of mourning. On this day, the national flag was flown at half-mast on all public buildings, a poignant tribute to his profound influence and service to the nation.
