The Office of Disaster Management (ODM), in collaboration with the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC), will host a series of community meetings this week to discuss recent earth movement and provide updated volcano awareness information to residents in southern Dominica.
The meetings are scheduled for Gallion on Monday, July 27, and for the neighbouring communities of Soufrière and Scotts Head on Wednesday, July 29. Both sessions will begin at 6:00 p.m., with the Soufrière and Scotts Head meeting taking place at the LAMA Building.
According to the ODM, the first meeting in Gallion will focus on concerns raised by residents regarding recent earth movement in the area. Officials from the UWI Seismic Research Centre and other agencies will also provide information on recent geological activity, volcano monitoring and emergency preparedness.
ODM representative Carlisle Jno-Baptiste encouraged residents to attend and share their concerns directly with the experts.
The meetings are intended to provide communities with accurate scientific information while creating an opportunity for residents to ask questions and better understand the natural processes affecting the area.
Organizers say public participation is an important part of strengthening community preparedness and ensuring residents remain informed about developments related to volcanic activity and ground movement.
The sessions form part of the ongoing collaboration between the Office of Disaster Management and the UWI Seismic Research Centre to improve public awareness, encourage community engagement and promote disaster readiness in areas located near Dominica’s active volcanic system.
