Green Climate Fund Supports Major Drainage Upgrade Project

The Government of Dominica is set to officially launch a major climate resilience initiative aimed at improving drainage infrastructure and reducing flood risk in communities along the island’s southwest coast.
The project, titled Restore and Improve Drains and Culverts from Pointe Michel to Soufrière, will be implemented under the Green Climate Fund’s Enhanced Direct Access Programme. The initiative represents a significant investment in strengthening infrastructure to better withstand the impacts of climate change while improving public safety and protecting vulnerable communities.
The project will focus on upgrading drains and culverts along the southwest corridor to improve stormwater management and reduce the risk of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
Officials say the infrastructure improvements are expected to enhance the resilience of roads and surrounding communities while helping to safeguard public and private property from flood-related damage. The project also forms part of the government’s wider strategy to build climate-resilient infrastructure across Dominica.
The official launch will also serve as a community engagement session, providing residents, stakeholders and community leaders with an opportunity to learn more about the scope of the works, implementation schedule and anticipated benefits.
During the session, project officials will outline construction timelines, explain implementation arrangements and discuss the communication mechanisms that will be used to keep communities informed throughout the life of the project. Residents will also have an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback as construction progresses.
The event is expected to bring together representatives from government ministries, village councils, contractors, development partners, technical agencies and community organizations involved in delivering the project.
The official launch and public engagement session is scheduled to take place at the Pointe Michel Community Centre on Wednesday, July 8, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
Government officials say the project reflects Dominica’s ongoing commitment to strengthening national resilience in the face of increasingly frequent and intense weather events linked to climate change. By investing in improved drainage systems and climate-resilient infrastructure, the initiative aims to reduce future disaster risks while supporting safer, more sustainable communities along the island’s southwest coast.
