Fifteen retired health care workers who dedicated years of service to Dominica’s primary healthcare system were formally recognized during activities marking Primary Health Care Week, held in honour of the late Dr. Carissa Etienne.
The recognition ceremony took place at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital, where former nurses, midwives, public health aides, and support staff were celebrated for their long-standing contributions to community-based care.
Among those honoured were primary care nurses, registered nurses and midwives, family nurse practitioners, public health personnel, and support workers who played critical roles in delivering care across communities, often under demanding conditions.
Minister for Health, Wellness and Social Services, the Hon. Cassanni Laville, described the awardees as pillars of the nation’s health system, emphasising their lasting impact on the lives of patients and communities. “I sincerely appreciate the work that all of you have been doing… we are honoring those who are really legends,” he said, noting that their influence continues even beyond retirement.
Chief Executive Officer of the Dominica Hospitals Authority, Dr. Kenneth Darroux, also reflected on the nature of primary health care, describing it as a field that extends far beyond clinical treatment.
“It involves sometimes traveling long distances and serving long hours… it involves home visits where the diagnosis extends far beyond the physical,” he explained, highlighting the deep connection between health care providers and the communities they serve.
The event formed part of a broader effort to highlight the importance of primary health care in improving overall health outcomes, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
Officials noted that the contributions of these retired workers helped shape the foundation of Dominica’s public health system, particularly through preventive care, patient education, and community outreach.
The ceremony also served as a reminder of the ongoing need to invest in health care professionals, ensuring that future generations are equipped to continue the work started by those now being honoured.
