The Government of Dominica has approved the establishment of a Sperm Whale Reserve Board as part of efforts to strengthen marine conservation and protect one of the island’s most significant natural assets.
The board will provide strategic oversight, policy direction, and governance for the management of the Sperm Whale Reserve, which is designed to safeguard the sperm whale populations while promoting the sustainable use of marine resources.
Officials say the creation of the board marks an important step in implementing the provisions of the Sperm Whale Reserve Act and ensuring that conservation objectives are effectively achieved.
In addition to the board, Cabinet has approved the creation of key operational roles, including a Chief Sperm Whale Reserve Officer and a team of Sperm Whale Reserve Rangers. These positions will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the reserve, including monitoring, enforcement, and public education initiatives.
According to the government, the Chief Officer will oversee the coordination of all reserve activities. At the same time, the rangers will focus on surveillance, compliance, and stakeholder engagement to ensure adherence to the regulations governing the protected area.
The initiative is expected to strengthen Dominica’s reputation as a leader in marine conservation, particularly as the island continues to promote sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship.
Officials have also noted that the reserve aligns with broader national and international goals to protect biodiversity and build resilience against climate change.
The government has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Dominica’s marine environment, emphasising that the establishment of the board and supporting roles will enhance the long-term protection and sustainable management of the country’s unique ocean resources.
