Concerns about public participation in the ongoing voter confirmation exercise have returned to the political spotlight, with opposition figures questioning both turnout levels and the process’s effectiveness so far.
Leader of the Opposition Jesmyr Paul Victor said figures from several constituencies indicate low engagement during the early months of the exercise. She highlighted Grand Bay, where just 102 voters were confirmed, and La Plaine, with 120 confirmations, describing the numbers as troubling for communities with much larger electorates.
“This is not a healthy sign for a democratic process,” Victor said, arguing that the confirmation exercise should be reaching a far wider cross-section of eligible voters. He suggested that the pace of confirmations raises questions about public awareness, accessibility, and confidence in the process.
Victor also expressed concern about the timeline, noting that the exercise has been underway for more than two months. In his view, stronger outreach and clearer communication are needed to ensure voters understand both the purpose of confirmation and the consequences of failing to participate.
Opposition representatives have called on the Electoral Office to intensify public education efforts and to review whether confirmation centres, schedules, and staffing levels are sufficient, particularly in rural constituencies. They have also urged the authorities to publish regular, constituency-level updates so the public can better track progress.
Government officials, for their part, have maintained that the confirmation process is proceeding in line with established procedures and that participation typically increases as deadlines approach. They have pointed to mobile confirmation teams, extended hours, and ongoing public notices as measures already in place to improve access.
The voter confirmation exercise is a routine but critical element of the electoral system, intended to ensure that the voters list remains accurate and up to date. Failure to confirm can affect a citizen’s ability to vote in future elections. With political attention now focused on participation levels, the issue is expected to remain a point of contention as the process continues and as parties position themselves ahead of future electoral milestones.
