The Anse Kouanari Tourism Association Inc. (AKTA) hosted a Community Impact & Project Milestones Ceremony on December 29, 2025, in Castle Bruce, marking the successful closing of a UNDP GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP)–funded apiary project and the official opening of an ecosystem restoration initiative supported by the Dominica National Conservation Trust Fund (DNCTF).
A key highlight of the ceremony was the graduation of 21 community participants, who received certificates in recognition of their successful completion of basic beekeeping training. The event also provided a platform for participants to reflect, with beneficiaries sharing how the project has enhanced their skills, confidence, and commitment to environmental conservation. One beneficiary shared, “I never knew bees were so important to human survival. This project changed how I see farming and the environment. My bees are healthy, and I plan to increase my number of hives by 100% in the first quarter of 2026″.
Speaking at the Ceremony, Mr Keian Stephenson, Director of Agriculture in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy, noted that the initiative was a welcome intervention from the Ministry’s perspective as it will contribute to increased pollinator presence and expand honey production along the east coast of the island.
Mr Kevin James, President of the National Beekeeper’s Cooperative Society Ltd., reminded attendees of the importance of bees in environmental sustainability and as a viable livelihood option. He pledged the Cooperative’s continued partnership with AKTA to strengthen the apiculture sector and position Dominica as a regional leader in apiculture. Mr James also encouraged beneficiaries to persevere in their journey, moving
“from training to practice, from interest to involvement and from individual effort to collective growth”.
The ceremony further marked the official opening of AKTA’s new DNCTF-supported project, which will build on the gains of the apiary initiative by strengthening ecosystem restoration efforts, promoting climate-resilient livelihoods, and expanding community engagement in conservation activities across the Castle Bruce District. Additionally, AKTA announced the launch of its free plant propagation training, scheduled to commence
in late January, and invited farmers and residents of the district to register.
AKTA expressed sincere appreciation to the UNDP GEF SGP, DNCTF, implementing partners, trainers, and community members whose collaboration made both initiatives possible. Special thanks to Global Affairs Canada, the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund, and CUSO International for providing the funding and support for our new ecosystem restoration initiative.
As AKTA looks ahead, the organisation remains committed to advancing sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, and youth and community empowerment through inclusive, locally led approaches.
