The Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities (DAPD) Inc. is proud to announce its intention to establish the Women with Disabilities Gender-Based Violence Taskforce for the Commonwealth of Dominica.
This transformative initiative stems from the participation of DAPD’s President, Ms. Judy Sango, at the Women with Disabilities, Gender, and Violence Issues Across the Caribbean Symposium, held in Trinidad from June 25–26, 2025. Moved by the powerful exchanges and shared experiences, Ms. Sango returned to Dominica with a renewed commitment to address the pressing issue of gender-based violence (GBV) affecting women with disabilities.
The proposed Taskforce will serve as a dynamic platform for education, advocacy, and empowerment, with a focus on the following key areas:
- Education and Awareness: Delivering workshops, training sessions, and public campaigns to help women with disabilities understand their rights and recognize signs of abuse.
- Support Networks: Establishing safe spaces and peer support systems for sharing experiences, accessing resources, and receiving guidance.
- Policy Advocacy: Collaborating with policymakers and government agencies to strengthen legal protections and promote inclusive legislation.
- Capacity Building: Empowering women with leadership skills, self-advocacy tools, and knowledge to challenge discrimination and stigma.
- Regional Collaboration: Partnering with Caribbean organizations to exchange best practices and build a united front against GBV. Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities Incorporated (D.A.P.D Inc.)
“Women with disabilities must know that they are not alone in their struggles,” said Ms. Sango. “This Taskforce, once established, will be more than an initiative; it will be a movement of solidarity and empowerment. I hope that what we begin in Dominica will spark change throughout the region.”
As planning progresses, DAPD invites government agencies, civil society organizations, women with and without disabilities, and regional partners to collaborate in bringing this vision to life. Together, we can ensure that women with disabilities live in dignity, safety, and equality.
