Next week, 21 families in Scotts Head will receive keys to brand-new homes under the government’s housing expansion program. The announcement was made by Denise Charles-Pemberton, Parliamentary Representative for the Soufrière constituency, who said the initiative reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to uplifting families through housing.
“In terms of the homes in Scotts Head, I am really excited and proud as a parliamentary representative of the Soufrière constituency that within a week, we’ll be handing keys to 21 families in Scotts Head, to more resilient homes,” she stated.
Charles-Pemberton emphasized the transformative impact of the project on families who have faced long-standing economic hardship. “Scotts Head has the best view in Dominica, and the Scotts Head Seaview homes are going to make a tremendous impact on the recipients, the beneficiaries of that resilient housing program,” she said.
She drew attention to the struggles of many beneficiaries, especially those who worked for decades without receiving pension benefits. “You have people whose mothers, their fathers worked for years. They have maybe worked on the roads in Dominica. And when they tired, they were not even part of a pension scheme,” she explained. “Most of these people thought that the employers were paying Social Security for them and retired and found out that nothing had been paid, no benefits.”
In response to that gap, she highlighted government intervention. “Their only support is the government pension, which the Labour Party implemented to ensure that people who do not receive a pension get $300 a month.”
She concluded that the impact of these homes extends well beyond shelter: “And by empowering people and improving their housing conditions, we’re not just giving somebody a house. We’re making an investment in a family, and I am so really proud of a government that puts housing as a priority in Dominica.”
