Samuel Johnson Responds to Viral Concerns Over Airport Construction in Wesley

Chief Executive Officer of the International Airport Development Company, Samuel Johnson, has addressed public concerns surrounding the safety and progress of Dominica’s international airport project following the circulation of a viral video. The footage, widely shared on social media, depicted what appeared to be significant land spillage on a section of the runway under construction in the Wesley area.

In response, Johnson clarified that the imagery was misinterpreted. He explained that the video captured a temporary depression caused by backfilling near a property that had only recently been vacated following acquisition and compensation. Due to heavy rainfall, water accumulated in the low-lying area, giving the impression of structural failure. However, Johnson emphasized that the situation was routine and under control.

There’s going to be backfilling and compaction in that area to ensure stability. The project is progressing as scheduled, and proper engineering protocols are being strictly followed. There’s no major failure here.

He added that public concern reflected national interest in the success of the project. “The fact that it’s being talked about is an indication that people care about the airport’s completion and quality,” Johnson noted.

Johnson also revealed that the construction is now entering a new phase involving landside facilities—including the terminal building, cargo and aircraft maintenance hangars, fire services, and air traffic control infrastructure. If final approvals are met, ground works on these facilities could begin as early as June or July.

Despite minor hiccups, including limited operating hours at the quarry due to a court-ordered injunction, Johnson assured the public that solutions are being implemented. “We’ve been working closely with Lands and Surveys to identify a supplemental quarry site to avoid any delays in project timelines,” he stated.

The international airport is considered one of Dominica’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, central to enhancing air access and bolstering economic growth, particularly in tourism and international trade. As construction continues, government officials and the project’s engineering teams have reiterated their commitment to transparency, safety, and on-time delivery.
