New Women’s Basketball League to Launch in Dominica, DABA Announces

Dominica’s women athletes and basketball fans are set to celebrate a significant milestone this season as the Dominica Amateur Basketball Association (DABA) formally introduces a national Women’s League. The move marks the association’s commitment to strengthening the sport’s presence among women and creating new competitive pathways across the island.
In a statement released on social media, DABA announced that the new league will launch with three teams and expand in future seasons. League Vice-President Yannick Regis highlighted that the Women’s League aims to provide high-level competition, build local talent, and position Dominica as a regional force in women’s basketball. “This league is designed to cultivate the next generation of players,” Regis said. “By offering structured competition at the domestic level, we hope to lay a foundation not just for elite performance, but for basketball as a career option for Dominican women.”
The decision to launch the Women’s League follows years of grassroots development on the island, where women’s basketball has grown steadily though lacked formal national competition. Social-media commentary has applauded the initiative, with many residents welcoming the opportunity for women players to gain greater visibility and recognition.
DABA has already begun the preparation process: registration is open for clubs, coaches are being briefed on league regulations and standards, and venues are being secured. Organisers have confirmed that games will be played on weeknights with weekend showdowns, ensuring accessibility for fans and players who balance sport with work and study. The launch is timely, as the Caribbean region is witnessing a surge of interest in women’s basketball, and Dominica’s new structure positions it to tap into regional tournaments and greater talent development pathways. Moreover, the league supports broader national goals of youth engagement, women’s empowerment and using sport as a tool for social development.
The inaugural season is scheduled to begin later this year at the Massacre Indoor Sports Complex, with a community celebration opening event. Tickets will be available at affordable rates to encourage families and supporters to attend games and cheer on local talent.
DABA officials emphasise that the Women’s League is more than just competition, it’s a statement of intent. “We are sending a message that basketball, and sport in general, is for everyone,” Regis noted. “By investing in our women athletes, we invest in our nation’s future.”
