National Exams Begin for 750 Grade Six Students Across 58 Centers

This week, 750 students across Dominica are sitting the Grade 6 National Assessment, marking a key moment in the island’s primary education calendar. Comprising 373 girls and 377 boys, candidates are writing exams at 58 centres nationwide, starting from 7:45 AM each day.

The assessment runs over two days, Thursday, May 29 and Friday, May 30. On the first day, students take multiple-choice tests in Language Arts and Social Sciences, with Language Arts also including a written composition. On the second day, mathematics, science, and technology are assessed using selected response papers.

Krishna Robbins, Education Officer for Measurement and Evaluation, stated that the Ministry of Education has prepared thoroughly to ensure the successful staging of the exams. She noted that this includes pertinent guidelines for relevant stakeholders and training of supervisors, ensuring standardization and fairness across all locations.

The national assessment is not just an academic checkpoint. It plays a central role in determining placements for secondary school and provides valuable feedback to the Ministry of Education on curriculum performance and student readiness across the country.

Despite challenges faced by schools in recent years, especially those emerging from post-pandemic learning gaps, this year’s assessment continues the national commitment to consistent academic standards.

Support has also poured in from the wider community. Families, teachers, and principals across Dominica have been actively preparing students for this critical week through revision sessions, mock exams, and morale-boosting encouragement.
