Melissa Skerrit Details Peebles Park Boxing Gym and Youth Courts

During the First Meeting of the Third Session of the Eleventh Parliament on July 28, 2025, Roseau Central Constituency Member of Parliament Hon. Melissa Skerrit delivered a detailed account of community-centred initiatives currently underway, spotlighting achievements in education, housing, youth development, and urban beautification.

Among the headline initiatives is the near-completion of a new boxing gym at Peebles Park, a project long promised to youth in the city. “The boxing gym at Peebles Park is almost complete, with just the painting left to be done,” Skerrit told the House. The gym is intended to provide young people with structured opportunities for physical activity and discipline.

Also underway is the construction of a new basketball court in Yampiece, complementing a completed court already in use at Peebles Park. “A basketball court was constructed at Peebles Park and is actively being used by the youth,” she noted.

On the education front, upgrades have been carried out at two learning institutions: the Dominica Grammar School and the Roseau Boys School. Skerrit confirmed that the latter also benefited from the distribution of learning materials to 150 students.

In support of vulnerable households, the MP reported that 61 families received material assistance to repair or improve their homes. Meanwhile, 76 elderly individuals were supported through minor home upgrades and regular social care visits. “We have also assisted 76 elderly people with social care, including minor repairs to their homes and regular home visits,” she stated.

Looking ahead, plans have been finalized for the redevelopment of the Pottersville Savannah into a multifunctional space for sports, culture, and recreation. The design includes a covered stage, seating, courts, and improved drainage.

The Roseau Central constituency office has also led a beautification campaign that includes the removal of derelict vehicles, building facelifts, and new public signage in coordination with the Roseau City Council.

These efforts form part of what Skerrit described as “a comprehensive strategy to uplift the lives of residents in Roseau Central while creating safe and inclusive public spaces.
