Education Reform Endorsed by St. Martin Primary School

The start of the new academic year in Dominica has brought renewed momentum for education reform, with St. Martin Primary School publicly affirming its support. Principal Brinette Moreau expressed confidence that the reforms will enhance student learning and participation, particularly in areas such as extracurricular activities, civics, and community engagement.

According to Moreau, St. Martin Primary is already aligned with many of the reform’s objectives, making the transition smoother for both students and teachers. She pointed to the school’s involvement in the OECS PEARL Programme, in which St. Martin serves as a pilot institution. The initiative emphasizes the integration of digital tools and devices into classroom learning, allowing students to adapt to technology while deepening their academic engagement.

The principal noted that combining the reform measures with the OECS PEARL Programme would help prepare students for a modernized education system. She emphasized that students are already familiar with digital devices and online platforms, and incorporating these into structured learning will bring tangible benefits.

However, Moreau also highlighted persistent challenges facing Dominican education, particularly limited parental involvement. She observed that while parents ensure their children have the necessary materials, many fall short in providing consistent academic support at home. Issues such as reduced supervision of online activities and a lack of encouragement for reading remain obstacles to student progress.
