Dominica Reaffirms Commitment to CARICOM Free Movement
Dominica has reiterated its commitment to the full implementation of the CARICOM free movement initiative, with Ambassador to the OECS and CARICOM, His Excellency Dr. Gerard Jean-Jacques, confirming the island’s leadership role in the regional effort. Alongside Barbados, Belize, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica has pledged to implement free movement measures by October 1, 2025.
Ambassador Jean-Jacques, speaking on DBSā Discoveries program, described the initiative as both timely and necessary given the shared socio-economic challenges in the Caribbean. He emphasised that now more than ever, regional unity and cooperation are essential for navigating global uncertainty. Referring to the group of four countries as the “Fantastic Four,” he expressed hope that the rest of the CARICOM states will soon follow suit.
The ambassador also noted that the concept of regionalism should extend beyond the English-speaking Caribbean, acknowledging the Caribbean Seaās wider geopolitical context, including Latin American states. He urged all CARICOM members to embrace the broader vision of integration and shared prosperity.
The move toward full free movement is expected to remove restrictions on travel, work, and residency among participating member states. For Dominicans, it may mean greater access to employment and education across the region without the need for work permits or lengthy immigration processes.
Dominicaās position reinforces its support for deeper regional ties and its belief that integration is the most viable path to resilience in the face of global economic pressure.
