Dominica Cancer Society Hosts Prostate Cancer Awareness in Kalinago Territory

The Dominica Cancer Society takes its message of “early detection, saves lives” to the Kalinago Territory this week. This is as the Society’s Men Support Group observes Prostate Cancer Awareness Month with the theme: “Men, Your Prostate Health Matters”.
On Thursday, 11th September, a Prostate Cancer Awareness Session will be held at Ma Cuffy’s Shop at Mahaut River from 4.00pm. Similar sessions will be held on Friday 12th at Willard’s shop in St Cyr and Friday 13th at Theresa’s Shop in Pointe, Salybia with the final one on Friday 19th September at Sineku Bus Stop . These sessions will be followed with Prostate Cancer screening at the Health Centres and are organized by the Men Support Group of the Dominica Cancer Society in collaboration with the Castle Bruce District Health Team and the Kalinago Council.
These Block Sessions are meant to meet men where they are and to present information to them on Prostate Health and other health conditions affecting men in a form that they can relate to. This is also in keeping with the thrust of Primary Health on accessibility of information and care. Similar sessions will also be conducted in other Health Districts.
A few laboratories and pharmacies are also collaborating with the Society this month in offering reduction on cost for Prostate Specific Antigen Tests and Prostate Cancer medications. Screening services are also available at all Health Centres and at some private doctors’ offices at no cost during the month All this is being done to improve the health of men for family security and the country’s development.
Activities for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month are all geared to reach men and their families with information about Prostate Cancer risk and the need to make screening a top priority. The DCS encourages men to act now.
