Blackmore Urges Police to Embrace Modern Crime-Fighting Tools

Minister for National Security Rayburn Blackmoore has urged the Dominica Police Force to intensify its shift toward modern crime-fighting methods, stressing that traditional approaches are no longer adequate in an era of rapidly evolving criminal activity. His remarks were delivered during Police Week, highlighting the role of law enforcement in public safety.
Blackmore noted that while the core duties of the police remain unchanged, maintaining public order, safeguarding life and property, and investigating crime, the environment in which these duties are carried out has transformed significantly. He said the force must “adjust its practices to suit contemporary times” by embracing technology-driven investigative tools and strengthening community-centered policing.
The Minister welcomed the Commissioner’s commitment to expanding community policing, describing it as essential for building trust and resolving local conflicts before they escalate. He also pointed to the need for improved information-management systems, explaining that accurate digital records and timely data analysis are now fundamental to solving cases efficiently.
Blackmore emphasized that law enforcement officers must be trained continuously to keep pace with new investigative techniques. He said upskilling will allow the police to better detect sophisticated criminal patterns, support intelligence-led operations, and respond more effectively to emerging threats.
His comments come at a time when the Police Force is undertaking initiatives to reduce the circulation of illegal firearms and strengthen public safety efforts. Blackmore said these national challenges require both modern tools and deeper engagement with communities across the island.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing resources for training and modernization, noting that an adaptable and well-equipped police service is vital to Dominica’s security and national development.
