Grand Bay Constituency

The Grand Bay Constituency, also known as Berekua or South City, is a prominent electoral district in the Commonwealth of Dominica. Established in 1975, it encompasses the communities of Grand Bay, Montine, and Bordieux, situated within Saint Patrick Parish.

The Constitution of Dominica divides the nation into single-member constituencies to elect representatives to the House of Assembly. The Grand Bay Constituency is one such division, with its boundaries defined by the Electoral Boundaries Commission. These boundaries are periodically reviewed to ensure fair and effective representation.
Geographical Boundaries of the Grand Bay Constituency
The Grand Bay Constituency is located in the southern part of Dominica, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east. It includes the main village of Grand Bay and surrounding communities such as Bordieux and Montine. The terrain is characterised by mountainous landscapes, with notable features including Morne Anglais and Morne Watt to the north, and the Foundland Range to the northeast and east. The area is also traversed by rivers like the Geneva River, which flows into the sea.

Dr. Vince Henderson, representing the Dominica Labour Party (DLP), won the by-election held on November 25, 2021, following the passing of Edward Registe. He currently serves as the Parliamentary Representative for the constituency.
Cultural and Natural Features
Grand Bay, often referred to as the cultural capital of Dominica, is renowned for its vibrant dance, music, art, and craft traditions. The community actively preserves the Creole language and hosts various cultural events, reflecting the area’s rich heritage. The village is surrounded by scenic mountain ranges and is characterised by its narrow streets and traditional architecture.
Infrastructure and Development
The Government of Dominica has initiated several development projects in the Grand Bay Constituency, focusing on housing, education, and community facilities. Notably, the Grand Bay Primary School underwent reconstruction after being damaged by Hurricane Maria in 2017. The project received funding from the Canadian Government and the Citizenship by Investment Programme of Dominica.
Additionally, efforts have been made to improve housing conditions by constructing new housing units for residents. The government continues to invest in infrastructure to enhance the quality of life for the constituents.
