Belfast

Belfast is a residential area within the Saint Paul Parish on the west coast of Dominica. Positioned between the villages of Mahaut and Jimmit, Belfast encompasses residential neighbourhoods and industrial zones, including the Belfast Estate.
Geography and Location of Belfast
Belfast lies along the Belfast River, which originates from the Morne Trois Pitons National Park and flows westward, eventually emptying into the Caribbean Sea near Zaaman Park. The Edward Oliver Leblanc Highway traverses the area, and the Belfast Bridge facilitates passage over the river.
Residential and Industrial Features
The community comprises various residential developments, such as Upper Belfast, known for its elevated terrain and scenic views. Properties in the area range from family homes to rental apartments, reflecting a blend of traditional and modern architectural styles.
Industrial activity is prominent along the Jimmit Industrial Road, which hosts facilities like Dominica Coconut Products, a manufacturer that has historically utilised the Belfast River as a water source.
Historical Context
Historically, Belfast was part of a larger estate system during the colonial era, with the Belfast Estate being a significant agricultural operation. Over time, the area transitioned from plantation-based agriculture to a more diversified economy, incorporating residential, commercial, and industrial elements.
Community and Lifestyle
Today, Belfast offers a mix of suburban living with access to natural landscapes and industrial employment opportunities. Its proximity to the capital city, Roseau, and other key locations makes it a strategically positioned community for residents and businesses.
