Barry River
Barry River is a short waterway of approximately 3.3 km, located in Saint John Parish on the northwest coast of Dominica. Originating from multiple tributaries on the southern slopes of Morne Les Héritiers, Morne Brulés, and Morne Morson, it flows generally westward and then turns south around the northern edge of Sugar Loaf Estate, before joining the Indian River just upstream of Prince Rupert Bay at Portsmouth.
Geographic Course and Environmental Context
The Barry River begins at elevations of around 200 m and descends rapidly through dense rainforest and agricultural terrain. After encircling the Sugar Loaf Estate area, it merges with the Indian River, which continues through mangrove swamps to discharge into the Caribbean Sea at Prince Rupert Bay, serving as part of the watershed feeding Portsmouth’s riverine ecosystem.
Barry River lies within a region known for its ecological diversity and historical settlements. It runs adjacent to Sugar Loaf Estate, a former plantation now part of a residential and rural area. The river’s watershed includes fertile valleys near Portsmouth, contributing to local agriculture, freshwater retention, and eco-tourism activities such as boating on the Indian River.
