Paix Bouche Cultural Group Flexible
Description
The Paix Bouche Cultural Group, formed in the early 1980s in the northern village of Paix Bouche, has long been one of Dominica’s most recognised custodians of traditional heritage. Their primary focus is preserving and performing Bèlè—a traditional dance accompanied by drumming and Creole call-and-response vocals echoing Dominica’s African lineage. Rooted in village tradition but shaped by national pride, their repertoire includes folk songs, storytelling, and ceremonial performances reflecting rural Dominican life.
Performances and Cultural Representation
The group has earned both national acclaim and international attention. Their performances have graced stages at the World Creole Music Festival, CARIFESTA XIII, and notably Expo 2012 in Yeosu, South Korea, where they served as cultural ambassadors for Dominica. Their colourful attire, rhythmic footwork, and live drumming have captivated diverse audiences, and their role in promoting cultural identity remains vital to Dominica’s creative sector.
Education and Community Engagement
In addition to their performances, the group is highly engaged in cultural education. They conduct workshops across Dominica, often in collaboration with schools and youth groups, to teach traditional dance, drumming, and Creole language. Their commitment to intergenerational learning has helped preserve elements of Dominican folklore that might otherwise be lost. In 2023, the group celebrated its 40th anniversary with a vibrant showcase, marking four decades of active participation in the island’s cultural development.
