Dr. Irvin Andre Says Dominicans Facing Economic Disadvantage

Justice Dr. Irvin Andre has sharply criticised what he described as economic policies that disadvantage ordinary Dominicans while granting major concessions and opportunities to foreign interests.

Speaking during a public discussion, Dr. Andre argued that many citizens are struggling to achieve genuine economic independence despite years of national development efforts.

According to Dr. Andre, the issue extends beyond income alone and includes access to opportunity, ownership, investment, and long-term economic security for Dominican families.

This is an assault on the economic independence of Dominicans who are striving to become independent,” he stated.

He criticised what he described as disparities in the treatment of foreign investors and local citizens, pointing to tax concessions reportedly ranging from millions of dollars for external entities while many Dominicans continue facing financial hardship and limited access to economic advancement.

Dr. Andre also questioned systems that, in his view, make it easier for some foreign nationals to conduct business while local citizens face heavier scrutiny and fewer advantages.

You relegate your own folk to second-class status in their own community,” he said during the discussion.

The retired judge additionally referenced conditions within the Kalinago Territory, arguing that the indigenous community continues to experience deeper levels of economic marginalisation and underdevelopment.

While supporters of government investment policies often argue that foreign investment remains necessary for economic growth, infrastructure development, and job creation, critics continue raising concerns about whether the long-term economic benefits are being distributed fairly among Dominican citizens.
