Dominican Film Selected for Prestigious Annecy Festival in France
Dominica’s creative sector is gaining international recognition following the selection of a locally connected film for screening at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France.
The animated production, Equity in the Workplace: The Experience of Black Irish Women in Academia and the Teaching Profession, created by Sandra Vivas, has been chosen as one of just 66 entries in the TV and commissioned films category. It is also the only film from the Caribbean region included in this year’s lineup.
Vivas, who has been a Dominican citizen since 2009 and is affiliated with the Waitukubuli Artists Association, described the achievement as a breakthrough for both her work and the country’s presence on the global creative stage.
“I’m so incredibly overjoyed… it’s the most important animation film festival in the world,” she said, noting that the selection opens doors to further opportunities and exposure.
The Annecy Festival, held annually in June, is widely regarded as the leading international event dedicated to animation, attracting thousands of industry professionals, filmmakers, and audiences from around the world.
Vivas explained that the recognition places Dominica in a new position within the global animation landscape, showcasing the island’s creative potential and storytelling capabilities.
“It’s great for Dominica because it really puts us on the map,” she added, highlighting the importance of representation at such a high level.
The film is based on a book by Dr. Ebun Joseph and explores themes of equity and lived experiences within academic and professional spaces.
Officials and members of the creative community say the selection signals growing opportunities for Dominican artists and reinforces the importance of continued investment in the cultural and creative industries.
