Dominica is currently hosting a major regional telecommunications summit, bringing together policymakers, regulators, and technical experts from across the Americas to address key issues shaping the future of digital communication.
The 47th Meeting of the Permanent Consultative Committees of the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission is taking place from April 6 to 10 at the InterContinental Hotel in Portsmouth, with more than 150 local participants and approximately 190 remote delegates representing 42 countries.
The meeting serves as a critical platform for collaboration among member states as they work to develop unified regional proposals ahead of the World Radiocommunication Conference scheduled for 2027.
Officials say discussions are focused on a range of emerging and complex issues, including satellite-to-mobile connectivity, lunar communications, and the regulation of low-Earth-orbit satellite systems to ensure compliance with international standards.
The summit also highlights Dominica’s growing role in global telecommunications governance, particularly as a leading English-speaking Caribbean country contributing technical proposals on behalf of small island developing states. Organizers noted that participation in such high-level discussions allows Dominica and other regional partners to influence global policy decisions that impact communication networks, digital access, and technological innovation.
The government has emphasized that hosting the event reflects its commitment to advancing digital development and ensuring that Caribbean perspectives are represented in international regulatory frameworks.
Officials added that the outcomes of the discussions will help shape policies that support improved connectivity, innovation, and inclusive growth across the region, while strengthening Dominica’s position in the evolving global digital landscape.
