MPs Spotlight Community-Level Progress Across the Island

At the June 24th sitting of Parliament, Members of Parliament turned attention to the day-to-day progress being made in their constituencies. From water supply upgrades to support for microenterprises and improved access infrastructure, Members shared updates aimed at demonstrating how national policy is being implemented on the ground.
Hon. Cozier Frederick, Parliamentary Representative for the Salybia Constituency, spoke about at the Kalinago Territory, where water system improvements were carried out in partnership with DOWASCO. He said the upgrades have helped stabilise water availability in areas that frequently experience supply interruptions during dry months.
Hon. Octavia Alfred, member for the Castle Bruce Constituency reported that residents are benefiting from small grants made available through national support programs. Constituents have been using the funds to start or strengthen local businesses, a move the MP said is contributing to self-reliance and income generation across multiple villages.
Hon. Kent Edwards, representing La Plaine Constituency, noted that retaining walls and drainage works have been completed in high-risk areas, aimed at improving public safety during the hurricane season. While he did not specify project totals, he emphasized that community feedback had been overwhelmingly positive, with many residents calling the interventions long overdue.
From the agricultural sector, Hon. Roland Royer confirmed the government’s delivery of over 1,200 metric tonnes of fertilizer to farmers across Dominica. His remarks suggest the bulk of this support has already been distributed to priority farming zones in need of input subsidies.
Minister for Public Works, Hon. Cassanni Laville, stated that road maintenance and stabilization work continues in several locations, often with the involvement of local contractors. While his remarks did not outline the exact scope of projects by region, he emphasized that retaining walls and drainage remain high priorities as part of the Ministry’s current agenda.
Though specific budgets and schedules were not outlined during the session, the updates gave a constituency-by-constituency snapshot of how government agencies are engaging at the community level. These efforts, according to the MPs, reflect a wider policy goal: that infrastructure and economic support be visible and impactful at the household scale.
