International Airport Construction Passes 40% Mark; Cargo Terminal, Tunnel Next

Construction of Dominica’s long-awaited international airport has now passed the 40 percent mark, with major civil works well underway and the project advancing ahead of schedule. According to government updates delivered during the 2025/2026 Budget Address, the next key phases include the start of the cargo terminal and the construction of a tunnel connecting Wesley and Woodford Hill.

So far, four large culverts spanning over 2,000 metres have been completed to ensure proper drainage. The levelling of the runway is expected to finish by December this year, paving the way for paving and lighting installations. Work on the passenger terminal has already begun, and preparations are in motion for the air traffic control tower, fire rescue station, and supporting facilities.

A tunnel beneath the runway will provide continuous, safe access between the surrounding rural communities, ensuring that residents are not cut off by the airport’s layout. This element reflects efforts to reduce disruption and keep village life flowing alongside national development.

To date, the government has disbursed over $45 million in compensation to 235 property owners and completed 47 new homes, 31 of them directly built by the state, for those displaced by the airport’s footprint.

Once completed, the international airport is expected to dramatically improve Dominica’s airlift capacity, reducing travel times for visitors and making it easier for locals and businesses to connect with key markets. It is also a major step in government’s broader efforts to modernise infrastructure, attract investment, and drive tourism growth.

The airport is one of the most ambitious public works projects in Dominica’s history. With construction progressing steadily and major phases lined up, the island is edging closer to having a direct link to the wider world.
