Work on the Cabrits Marina in Portsmouth is picking up pace, as the project moves into its second phase with a confirmed global operator now on board. The marina, seen as one of Dominica’s key investments in marine tourism, is on track to open new economic doors for the north and the wider island.
Phase One, which includes the marina basin, revetment, and breakwater, is well underway and expected to be completed by June 2026. Procurement for Phase Two is scheduled to start this August, with the construction of jetties, pontoons, and core services set to begin by January. Once Phase Three is finished later that year, Dominica will finally have a fully serviced international marina.
What’s new, and significant, is the operator chosen to manage the facility. The government has signed on an internationally recognised company with top-tier Gold Anchor accreditation. That brings strong branding, consistent service standards, and global visibility, placing Cabrits on the radar of yacht owners, captains, and sailing communities who already know and trust the brand.
The benefits are expected to extend well past the dock. Local workers will be trained and hired. Surrounding businesses in Portsmouth, from mechanics and caterers to tour guides and laundries, could see steady demand from visiting vessels. And with more boat traffic, there’s potential for new opportunities in events, hospitality, and supplies.
The marina is part of a wider vision to diversify Dominica’s tourism industry. With its backdrop of Cabrits National Park, the location alone gives it a unique charm. But what matters more now is how well we prepare, training people, setting up services, and ensuring the community has a stake in what’s to come.
The north has waited a long time for something of this scale. Now it’s up to us to make it count.
